Lily: My family serves bubur merah putih [a red and white porridge made with palm sugar and coconut milk] in normal small plates, with banana leaf as sampiran. Sampiran is the banana leaf cut into round shape.
[Referring to a different style] This is called bubur takir. Takir is used for different rituals, can be for serving food or arranging ritual flowers. We can learn together how different shapes are used for different traditions and meanings.

The takir in our Home was made by Lily during the second iteration of our Banana Xchange (09/01/2022) event. From plates, to bowls and spoons, Lily shared different ways of using banana leaves to serve traditional foods from home, each with rich symbolic meaning. Beyond food spreads on whole banana leaves, there are other ways of sharing food with family and community.
