Brenda: Bot-ong is what we call patupat in my local dialect [ilokano]… and suman in Liza dialect [hiligaynon/ ilonggo] is ibus.

Liza: Actually it’s the same, just different wrapper!

Brenda is from Luzon, Philippines. Liza is from Oton, Iliolio, Philippines.

Bot-ong/ patupat is a sweet made from glutinous rice and coconut milk. Like suman/ ibus, it is a type of sweet broadly referred to as kakanin in the Philippines, like kueh in Singapore. There are various ways of making and wrapping these sticky rice snacks. Whilst string and tape are commonly used to secure the wrappers, Liza used (bamboo) toothpicks and ties made from banana leaves themselves (traditional method according to Liza. Each home has it own unique recipes and names. Liza recommends serving bot-ong with mango, or with brown sugar (made from sugarcane, not coconut) and sesame seeds.

The bot-ong in our Home was created during our ‘SayurXmas: Banana Xchange’ event (12/12/2021). In this engagement, we harvested fresh banana leaves from a garden and used them to wrap and serve various foods from our homes. Alongside Liza's bot-ong, Brenda shared her suman and biko recipes. In the same kitchen, we also prepared and shared a Boodle Fight together. Simultaneously, in another home, Tarmiati led another group in making iwel iwel together.
